Equine First Aid Kit

April 2003
- Absorbent Cotton
- Gambgee Non Stick Roll
- Gauze Roll, stretch type at least 2 inches wide
- Brown Gauze Roll at least 4 inches wide
- Vetrap or similar type
- Sterile Non-stick Gauze Dressings, 4 x 4 inches
- Sterile Gauze for cleaning wounds, the smaller ones
- Adhesive Tape, at least 1” wide
- Pressure Pads (non-deodorant sanitary napkins work well)
- Bandage Scissors, with the blunt end
- Saline Solution or bottled water for cleaning wounds
- Betadine for cleaning wounds
- Wound Dressing (Nitrafurazone or antibiotic ointment)
- Stethoscope
- Veterinary Thermometer with string and clip
- Vaseline (for the thermometer)
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Liniment
- Four leg bandages and four leg pads (quilts)
- Masking Tape
- Duct Tape
- Notebook and pencil
- Advil or Tylenol (for the horse owner)
- Small Bottle of Brandy (for the horse owner)
- Instant Ice Pack
- Squirt Bottle of Saline Solution (you can buy these in the eye department)
- Triple A Antibiotic Eye Ointment
It is also helpful to have an equine first aid book in your kit and the phone numbers of your veterinarian.
Plastic Storage Container with seal-tight lid to store everything in.
Normal Vital Signs are:
- Temperature 100.5 F
- Respiration 8 to 16 breaths per minute
- Heart Rate 30 to 45 beats per minute
