Equine First Aid Kit

Equine First Aid Kit

April 2003


  • Absorbent Cotton
  • Gambgee Non Stick Roll
  • Gauze Roll, stretch type at least 2 inches wide
  • Brown Gauze Roll at least 4 inches wide
  • Vetrap or similar type
  • Sterile Non-stick Gauze Dressings, 4 x 4 inches
  • Sterile Gauze for cleaning wounds, the smaller ones
  • Adhesive Tape, at least 1” wide
  • Pressure Pads (non-deodorant sanitary napkins work well)
  • Bandage Scissors, with the blunt end
  • Saline Solution or bottled water for cleaning wounds
  • Betadine for cleaning wounds
  • Wound Dressing (Nitrafurazone or antibiotic ointment)
  • Stethoscope
  • Veterinary Thermometer with string and clip
  • Vaseline (for the thermometer)
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Liniment
  • Four leg bandages and four leg pads (quilts)
  • Masking Tape
  • Duct Tape
  • Notebook and pencil
  • Advil or Tylenol (for the horse owner)
  • Small Bottle of Brandy (for the horse owner)
  • Instant Ice Pack
  • Squirt Bottle of Saline Solution (you can buy these in the eye department)
  • Triple A Antibiotic Eye Ointment


It is also helpful to have an equine first aid book in your kit and the phone numbers of your veterinarian.

Plastic Storage Container with seal-tight lid to store everything in.


Normal Vital Signs are:


  • Temperature 100.5 F
  • Respiration 8 to 16 breaths per minute
  • Heart Rate 30 to 45 beats per minute
